tati wonder

these two were the men of my evening:

tati & wonder

tonight nick and i went to see the triplets of belleville in the park as we waited for the sun to set we ate some falafel from azuri and listened to stevie wonder.

triplets of belleville, 2003

i had never seen the triplets of belleville before but i was on my ever growing must see movie list.
it sure did not disappoint.

and if you like this, you might like these too:

it's in the criterion collection, the poster is awesome, and it's a tati

beach bum

it's in my blood. i am genetically engineered to love the beach. once my family moved away from california, i always knew i would one day be moving back. i loved the diversity, i loved the culture, i loved living outside of san francisco, i loved the food, and i loved summer days at the beach. but now i think i'm having a moment of hesitation. because new york has it all. it's not often that the words new york city conjure up the images of ocean tides rolling in on sandy shores. but folks let me tell you it's true. yes, this california girl felt that sand in between her toes once again. it has been awhile.

after a weekend with the boys, it was nice to hang out with marissa and lay out on the beach. we made our way to brighton beach which happens to be in the russian part of brooklyn. i didnt know moscow was on the beach did you? anyways, i am hooked and will be back.

afterwards we got ourselves some absolute bagel. after scarfing down my bagel with cream cheese, i decided i needed a second. this time i just got a plain bagel, not toasted and no cream cheese. and let me tell you its not the cream cheese that is amazing. next, we made our ways to H&M, don't worry, not much damage was done. but with the heat and humidity, marissa and i are looking for ways to wear the least amount of clothing without looking skanky. i am in love with this dress, marissa bought.

(picture to come, couldn't find it on the website)

to celebrate our new purchases, enjoying some magnolia's bakery in byrant park as the sun set down the avenues seemed just the way to do it. we recommend the lemon bar although the banana cream pudding is always a good choice too.

and to end a perfect day i stepped in a pile of poo.

all good things come from italy

this past week, i got off work earlier than usual, so of course that meant i celebrated with FOOD.

italian food to be specific:

on wednesday:
nick, zack and i went to max soha, a place that tiffany recommended on her blog and it just happened to be super close to my house. we sat outside on the patio, which was just lovely. nick and i ordered bruschetta for an appetizer and we were sold. the tomatoes were so fresh and so delicious. then we ordered the spaghetti carbanora thanks to tiffany's recommendation again, as well as a confirmation from our waiter. it was way good. i had been crazing some good italian and it hit the spot for sure. afterwards, since we just couldn't part with max yet we ordered desert. one apple tart, one tiramisu, and one cheesecake. the cheesecake was the only one worth the money and the calories. and the tiramisu was sad, a sorry attempt. so we say, 3.8/5 for food, but skip over elsewhere for desert.
thank you tiff!

on thursday:
nick, kent, cassie, melissa, jenny, and i went to grotta azzurra over in little italy. the first day i met cassie she was raving about gnocchi. i had tried it before but didn't remember it being mind blowing. so grotta azzurra had expectations to live up to for sure, especially considering the fact that i had just had italian the night before. when we arrived, they brought out some bread with a yummy olive spread. and i could tell the meal was headed in the right direction. for an appetizer, nick and i split a caprese salad. their mozzeralla, with prefect red, juicy tomatoes and fresh basil was right on. but then the real magic happened. gnocchi from grotta azzurra will rock you. cassie knew what she was talking about. perfecty paired with a light fresh tomato sauce and fresh house made mozzerella cheese, the combination seemed sinful. a 4.5/5 for the gnocchi alone from me!
thank you cassie!

shanshan

i have the best sister ever. she's my little sister but i look up to her. literally, she is 6 feet 2 inches. no but she really is a wonderful example to me. everything she does she puts her whole heart into. on thursday, i was so sad i couldn't be at her graduation and hear her speak. i am so grateful to have her in the same state as me next year. i have a feeling i might just be driving up to logan frequently.

water for elephants

i've never found robert pattinson attractive until now.

cream cheese please

so i began planning for the weekend on monday. and when friday rolled around i had an itinerary all typed up which i proceeded to email to my friends. i attribute my excellent planning abilities to my grandma carol, the travel agent extraordinaire, and to my momma, the wonder woman in the flesh.

after work on friday we headed to the east village to get some dinner and we ended up at south brooklyn pizza. now this place was amazing. i think we all agreed that it was some of the best pizza we had ever had. later that night we went over to the red door again. i was feeling a little exhausted so after hanging around for one band, the technicolor glasses, nick, zack and i headed out to find some grub. we ended up at moonstruck diner for some shakes and cheese fries.

on saturday, i must have woken up in a cosmic confusion because of the worlds impending doom or something because it was a rough one for me. just to name a few of my blunders,  i ...

          left my card at home
couldn't find a bank to cash my check
          my metrocard turned faulty
          jumped a subway turnstile
          missed the train
          took the longest route possible
lady cussing at me for 5 minutes
spilled my dr. pepper on my white coat
          had my dr. pepper confiscated
lost my heel on the subway stairs

despite all, it was a fantastic day. marissa and i tried to get down to broadway early to try and get some student rush tickets to jersey boys, due to some of the set backs previously mentioned we were too late and the rush tickets were sold out. nick, marissa and i walked around to the different theaters and finally found three rush tickets all together to baby its you. so we snagged them up.

for lunch we stopped at absolute bagels, one of the best bagel joints in manhattan, just around the corner. i had an everything bagel with chive and garlic cream cheese and the taste combination was absolutely scrumptious. and i usually dislike cream cheese. afterwards, we made our way to the brooklyn flea. i was so worth the trek out to brooklyn. i felt like such a hipster snagging pictures of vintage/retro finds with instagram. i'm a cool cat. for an afternoon snack, marissa and i got some yummy doughnuts from dough's booth at the flea.  in the near future i would like to attend smorgasburg which is an extension of the brooklyn flea consisting entirely of food.

when we got home we took a cat nap and then got beautified for our broadway show. we had so much fun. the music was great and at the end everyone was up clapping and singing along. while i am out here i would like to see:

wicked (haven't ever seen it! ya best believe it)
how to succeed in business without really trying
          memphis
          billy elliot
          the importance of being earnest

for dinner we urbanspooned it and ended up at cafe mogador. we took a chance and it was so great. we ordered the falafel and hummus platter, the chicken casablanca tagine, and vegetable couscous and shared it all. it was food heaven.

we attempted to go the sky room, nyc's highest rooftop lounge, afterwards. but the line was too long. well really, marissa and i's skirts were not quite short enough or tight enough.

today, we decided to go to the new york public library. their celebrating 100 years exhibit just opened last week so we spent most of our time there. there was so much to see. we loved it. afterwards we headed over to madison square park where it was a tad too cold to be enjoyable but we were able to see juame plensa's installation piece. and we may or may not have visited shake shack... i braved cheese on my burger and i wasn't disappointed. but i think greasewood flat will always be the only place where i will ever prefer cheese on my burger, green chile cheese burger that is.

this weekend was a success
and cassie will even be bring some of these bad boys to works tomorrow. (cookies not men)
i just need to find someone to bring me some of these now (deep fried strawberries... trust me, just look at them)

agam

i love yaacov agam

and this image on ffffound today reminded me of his work

i love you lady liberty

i love waking up in the morning and hearing the cars on the streets and the people singing and talking on the streets below. i love listening to the pigeons on the window seal as i get ready in the morning. i like sitting on the subway in the morning just thinking about the day ahead and enjoying people watching at it's finest. i love walking up the subway stairs in union square and seeing the city all a buzz.

last sunday, marissa and i took the staten island ferry. seeing the city from the view was so breathtaking. the whole time i couldn't get over how excited and lucky i felt to be calling this place home for the next couple of months. the best thing about the ferry is you don't have to pay a dime. the ferry has definately been added to my favorite things i have done in new york. i want to go back when the sun is shining and perhaps take some time to explore staten island.

afterwards, marissa and i went and explored the chinatown and little italy. although the little italy restaurants were tempting, we decided we would come back another night. but we couldn't resist the cannolis. the chocolate ones are the way to go.

cookies increase productivity

at work this week i continued to fall in love with the dogs that run the place, the fizzy lizzys and wasabi rice crackers that are kept stoked, the beautiful flatiron building, and city bakery's cookies, oh and 'wichcraft's aren't too shabby either.

on monday night, marissa, nick and i went on a pinkberry date and it hit the spot for sure. it left nick
craving more for the rest of the week.

on tuesday, cassie finally got me to get on instagram and if you haven't yet got on board, whatcha waiting for?

on wednesday, cassie brought sister's dog gus to work. gus sure kept me in check.

and i came home to amazing blondies sitting in the kitchen. jess is amazing and we miss her already.
i also found out my piece in the aiga 100 show was selected for a merit award. booyah

on thursday, i cut my finger open with an xacto. best part about it? it was on the fingers that was also a burn victim. cassie was able to doctor me up pretty well with some butterfly closures though.

wes lets us know that eating cookies increases productivity. give in
and my little sister graduated from high school. oh and she is valedictorian. she's awesome. wish i could have been there.

on friday, itty bitty came back from his little vacation and warmed our hearts. oh how we missed him.

and the weekend began.

my best friend

kristen and andrew
5.14.11

i have said it so many times, but it is the truth. i have been blessed with the absolute best friends and family anyone could ask for.

my freshman year, i showed up to my dorm room and met my room mate miss kristen savage. neither of us knew or even expected that we would become best friends. we really couldn't have been more different. but it only took us a week or two at the most to become joined at the hip.

kristen over the past three years has become a part of my family. my dad has even referred to her as one of his own daughters. i have been so lucky to have her as a sista. it's crazy to me that i have only know her for three years because there are very few people that know me as well as she does. she has influenced my life for the better.

friday, as i rode the bus to DC, i couldn't help but reminisce about all the fun times we had together. for every song that came on my ipod, there was a kristen story or memory that popped into my head. on weekends, we were also so content to just hang out as the two of us. i'll miss those nights were we laughed until we cried or cried until we laughed. i'll miss eating cake batter, rainbow chip frosting or entire cookie cakes from walmart. and i'll sure miss driving around jamming everywhere we went.

i was hit with a wave of emotion as i watched kristen and andrew walked out of the DC temple. my bestfriend is officially wed. i can't believe how fast time flown by. and it was sad for me to think that our lives are now on different paths. it made me wish i we had been able to spend more time together these few past couple of months. but i was also proud. proud of the choices kristen and andrew have been and their decision to get married in the temple. and i was so touched by the love that was so obvious between the two of them.

i remember when kristen and andrew started dating. i was hesitant at first that andrew was trying to steal my girl away. but i wouldn't have given up the fight if i didn't think andrew was the best guy for my girl. i am glad i have had the opportunity to watch their relationship grow and develop. they make an absolutely beautiful couple. they are a joy to be around. and i know andrew loves ksav so very much. i am incredibly happy for them.

congrats khar but for habit's sake i'll still call you ksav if andrew's alright with that
i love you so stinkin much

cure burned fingers with food lovin

band aids with smily faces work pretty well

bandage artwork by cassie

but food therapy is the best for burned fingers and long hours at work.

cassie introduced me to westville, which i ate two nights in a row, cassie did three in a row, and the whole clan has been introduced as well.

westville is an organic food joint, and upon hearing that i was doubtful of it's awesome ness. if it had a name like pies & thighs (which just happens to be a place that i've heard i must go to in brooklyn) we would all know of its obvious yumminess. that being said i went into the deal with certain reservations.
but
their grilled cheese is still blowing my mind
it is gouda and cheddar on a portuguese muffin. the taste sensation is so beautiful.
and the sweet potato fries are superb,  i think this was the only time i have had sweet potato fries where in my head i wasn't thinking, "my mom makes this a million times better than you fools do"
next on my list to try there is the mac and cheese, the critics rank this as some of the best stuff in nyc

cassie also took us to black hound cakes. i will be attributing any weight gain this summer to her.

the cakes at black hound were not only adorable and miniature but also celestial status food. i got myself the triple chocolate mousse cake. the plan was to save the cakes til after dinner. but that wasn't stopping me. so with bare hands and my face i dug in. however i failed to notice that my piggish actions were about to take a disastrous turn. my half eaten cake fell onto the ground. i screamed. cassie jumped and yelled thinking i saw a rat and nick and kent tried to halt the tears that were welling up in my eyes. and they all talked me out of eating it off the sidewalk of east village.
but i'd still pay 7.50 to endure the pain of watching half of my cake fall to the ground each and every time.

i do think someone should pay me to eat food all day. its hard work.

i typed this with 6 fingers

so today at work, i thought i would use my bare hands to take my hot plate out of the toaster oven. however, that turned out to be a very bad idea. both of my thumbs and index fingers are blistered. and all day long i just wanted to cry. i ran to the post office for work with a bag of ice in my hands. the bag was dripping on my clothes and the look on my face must have been so pained that people even stopped to ask me what was wrong with me. and i have a feeling that there isn't much that shocks a new yorker.

on my way home on the subway i kept trying to take a picture of my fingers that would be as grotesque as they feel. i was unsuccessful. so just imagine something awful. pity will be appreciated.

not cool. hott

this did make me laugh out loud though
but i might just get in trouble for posting this, so watch it before i'm forced to take it down.

my family is awesome.

Papaya King

this is apparently a New York classic for cheap eats
i order a hot dog, curly fries, and papaya juice

my roommate jess is a bakery connoisseur and this was one of her recommendations
i got a brooklyn blackout cupcake and it was amazing
the frosting was amazing and the cupcake was filled with a chocolate pudding filling
blackout indeed, well in a good way

i'd come back again

Alexander Mcqueen Exhibit at the Metropolitian Museum of Art

when i read about this, it immediately went on my new york must see list
this man was incredible and the exhibit was insprising
i will be going back though when the crowds die down and im not pushed through
and um ticket prices are only donation based, meaning i paid one dollar to get in

it a must

FAO Schwarz

playing around on the piano is one of those new york things that you have to do
nick and i waited in line with the children and giddily danced around on the keys
we also enjoyed the barbie fashion show and barbie foosball table

Berdorf Goodman

berdorf goodman is one of new york's very high end department stores
we went in to browse and throughly enjoyed the experience
zack and nick got a cologne lesson as we all sampled kilian's new line
the absinthe vert scent was by far the best, got me swooning, very sexy

if i had a million dollars...

Jing Fung

after walking around i had two very hungry boys we wanted to try something new and not pay too much
the wait at cafe habana was too much for zack to bear so we ventured down to chinatown
jing fung proved to be the perfect solution for our empty stomachs
we ordered 9 different selections of dim sum and shared them all
affordable and yummy
the only one that we figured we prolli should have passed on was the stuffed eggplant ... way to go nick

yumm and yes we are going back

The Red Door

my friend cassie from work took us over to see a band play on saturday night
the venue was great
when the band finished up a dj came on and we danced until we were dripping with sweat

taken by the lovely cassie

i have the best friends and family. on my first day of work i woke up from text messages from some of my best buds wishing me good luck. my roommate jess even sent me on my way with a warm cookie in hand.

on thursday, the moderns had a big cinco de mayo party. after a long and busy day getting everything set up, i was so happy to see nick, kent and zack. they all showed up to hang out with wes and i. i couldn't have been happier to see them! they loved the moderns beautiful space and of course the free food.

i have the best little support group right here with me in new york.

puppy love

miss molly on an easter egg hunt
i love our family dog, miss molly. she is so sassy and so much fun. but i wasn't ever really sold on having a dog of my own until we came to new york in march. everyone has dogs here. and you remember that scene in 101 dalmatians, where they are walking through the park and everyone looks like their dog. well that honestly isn't too far from the truth people.

there are currently four main pups in my life:

sawyer: the little beagle puppy i live with
griffin: the moderns mascot pooch
itty bitty: the resident pomeranian
florence: the french bulldog that works next door but loves to come visit

i cant want to show you how adorable these guys are!
